Beautiful scenery of old town Edo Japan that can be witnessed in Kawagoe is only 30 minutes away from the heart of Tokyo. The well-known “Toki no Kane” or Bell of time and the “Ichiban gai” shopping street has its own charm and is also famous for their traditional sweets!

This time, I will introduce you to four of the most popular sweets in Kawagoe! So be prepared for some delicious gourmet report that will make your stomach growl!

 

Kawagoe’s representative street food is of course the Imokoi.

The brand for this delicacy has been known since the Edo period and people today have recognized the imokoi as one of Kawagoe’s sweet.

The texture of this sweet is undeniably unique, since it uses round slices of sweet potato, red bean, wrapped in a mochi or Japanese rice cake. Steams coming from the shop itself will make winter season a whole lot warmer and leave you with a strong appetite.

The shop is located next to the iconic Bell tower so make sure to come and try these unique sweets!

Norisuke San’s Baumkuchen.(*Currently closed.)

If you’re planning on bringing home a little something from Kawagoe then this is the right sweets for you. Here in Norisuke San’s Baumkuchen, they are selling Kawagoe Matcha flavored Baumkuchen that has rich matcha flavor and is very delicious!

Don’t feel like buying the whole cake? Don’t worry, they also sell small portion of the whole cake for 200 yen and is perfect for curious gourmet reporters. You can also see how they make the baumkuchen from scratch until they are ready for packaging.

It’s a great experience to be able to see the whole process, so why don’t you come here for some delicious baumkuchen ?

Koedo Osatsu-an’s Osatsu Chip.

These flat and wide chips are simply made from sweet potatoes. They have made their way to Instagram and other social medias for their photogenic appearance. Besides their unique look they are also very delicious! Try eating it first without anything, and after that try dipping it with their salted butter sauce, which is sold separately. Since these Osatsu chips are well known throughout Japan and even abroad, the store have customers lining up on weekends! So we recommend you to come during the weekdays or early in the morning.

Suisen-tei’s soft serve.

Not just your usual soft cream, but Suisen-tei is selling sweet potato flavored ice creams! The ice creams are all home made and crafted from ingredients that come from farmers nearby. The flavor is not that sweet for a soft serve, and you might just eat all of it in one bite!

Also, did you know that the famous “otousan” or the man serving the ice cream himself is the owner of the store? What a surprise! Why don’t you try coming to his shop and say hello, he is very friendly and has good sense of humor.
